Reality format The Extra Mile is getting its first international adaptation. Layoffs Coming For BBC News Unit: Report
On Tuesday, Forbes reported that the BBC is gearing up for about 500 layoffs in its news division that could be announced next month. The cuts would be part of an ongoing austerity drive at the broadcaster and could also include BBC Radio. The news arm currently employs about 8,000 staffers. It’s likely that industrial unrest could follow with employees at the corporation heavily unionized. The program to reduce costs was initiated in 2011 by then-Director General Mark Thompson. At the time, there also was a freeze on the license fee Britons pay to keep the broadcaster running. The freeze goes through 2016. When I asked the BBC for comment, I was provided with this statement: “We’re working at present to deliver savings of £800M a year by 2016/17, and we have said that there are difficult decisions ahead of us. Whilst we need to make savings, it would be wrong to comment on speculation.”
