It may be summer but as last night proved, the Sunday awards show rests for no season. Hosted by Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland and Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey, the Teen Choice Awards (0.8/3) took over most of Fox’s primetime on Sunday – and it was a very full night. The 2-hour show saw Jennifer Lopez showing up, Hunger Games’ Donald Sutherland getting a huge cheer, Divergent stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James taking home some wins as did The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. The Hunger Games sequel won best Sci-Fi/Fantasy pic with Fox 2000‘s The Fault In Our Stars snagging the Drama award. On the TV side, Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries, The Big Bang Theory and The Voice were all among the winners too from the more than 164 million votes that were cast from the public. Ratingswise, the 2014 TCA basically was even with the 2013 TCA. This year the show drew 2.57 million viewers. Last year’s TCA pulled a 0.8/3 rating and 2.62 million viewers last August 12 on Fox. Those results were the first time the TCA came in at less than 3 million viewers since 2006. Among teens themselves, this year’s TCA was steady with 2013 with a mere 6% dip.
With the PGA Championship running long, CBS shuffled its schedule around on Sunday. Unforgettable and Reckless were moved to the front of primetime and pre-empted across the country while the 60 Minutes repeat and Big Brother (1.7/5) were shifted to 9 PM and 10 PM respectively on the East Coast. All of which means, while BB was down 15% from its 8 PM Adults 18-49 result of last week, CBS’s ratings are all over the map, extremely tentative and essentially lacking any comparison to its August 3 ratings. Having said that, yesterday’s coverage of the final round of the golf tournament did see a 36% rise in metered market ratings over last year. With no Tiger Woods among the last round and Rory McIlroy’s dramatic win, the 3 PM – 9 PM PGA Championship earned a 6.0/13 in household ratings – that’s the best the golf coverage has done since the 7.5/17 result of 2007. From 7 PM to 9 PM, the PGA Championship final round got a 2.4/8 among Adults 18-49 in preliminary ratings. Added all up, CBS won the night with a 2.0/7 rating and 9.02 million viewers.
NBC ran American Ninja Warrior and America’s Got Talent repeats last night, however ABC was all originals in the reality show game with Wipeout (0.8/3) and Rising Star (0.7/2). Amidst the competition on other nets, the former was down 20% from its August 3 show while the live latter was down 22% from last week for both to hit all-time lows in preliminary ratings.
