Tiimes Square cash registers slowed down fractionally during Week 11 of the Broadway season, with total box office for 26 shows down about 1.7% to $25,926,516 from last week’s $26,391,544. Attendance figures matched that: down 1.8% to 237,242 from 241,351 for the week ending Sunday, according to the trade group Broadway League.
Several hits defied the trend. Beautiful goes from strength to strength at the Sondheim, improving by $16,743 to $1,325,505 and 103.2% of its gross potential. Aladdin keeps granting Disney‘s wishes, breaking the house record at its flagship New Amsterdam with a take of $1,602,785 — besting the $1.588M record set by Mary Poppins over Christmas week 2007. It’s at 108% of gross potential. At the Belasco, Hedwig And The Angry Inch continues to sock it home, taking in $1,087,988 — a Street-leading 130.39% of its gross potential.
At the American Airlines, it was Bye, Bye, Vi as the Sutton Foster starrer Violet ended its run with a closing-week boost of $50,487 and patrons filling just about every available seat. Tony winner A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder, at the Walter Kerr, was off $116K to a still-respectable 90%-plus total of $834,051. Cameron Mackintosh’s Les Miserables revival was down almost $100K, to $983,256 at the Imperial.
