1980s sci-fi anime series Robotech is being fast-tracked for the big screen by Sony. The studio acquired rights to the toon with an eye on developing it as a worldwide franchise. Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are producing from Michael Gordon’s script. Doug Belgrad, Michael De Luca and Matthew Milam are overseeing. Our sister publication Variety got there first on this one. Said De Luca: “Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life. That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”
Idris Elba is in negotiations to play a villain in Paramount‘s Star Trek 3. Exactly which villain Elba is playing is being kept quiet. Justin Lin is helming Star Trek 3 with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin set to return. Elba is coming off The Gunman and has Avengers: Age of Ultron coming. Our pal Justin Kroll at Variety broke this.
