Long-time tech pundit Leo Laporte is relaunching his 1990s show, The Screen Savers, as an hour-long variety show focused on tech topics and available online in both video and audio versions. Check out the just-released trailer above.
The New ScreenSavers will feature several of LaPorte’s long-time colleagues on his TWiT.TV network’s collection of tech-oriented programming, including Megan Morrone (who was part of the original show as Megan Olesky), Mike Elgan, Jason Howell, Father Robert Ballecer and Bryan Burnett (disclosure: I’ve appeared on Elgan’s Tech News Today online show twice in the past).
The new show will debut May 2, hosted by Emmy winner Laporte. The original show blew up during the original tech-industry bubble years of the late 1990s. It focused on the early days of the commercialized Internet and such (then-huge) topics as Napster and the Y2K bug, and then the deflation of that Internet bubble after late 2000, but has been off the air for a decade. Guest co-hosts on the new show will include some names from the original, including Patrick Norton, Kate Botello and Kevin Rose.
The new show will include help and how-to segments, trend pieces, product reviews and tech innovations.
“The original Screen Savers show was all about celebrating the geek in all of us and empowering everyone to use technology for a better life,” Laporte said. “I think the world still needs to hear that message.”
The show will be recorded live each Saturday afternoon at TWiT.TV’s Petaluma, Calif., headquarters and will be available for streaming online at live.twit.tv. It will also be available later for streaming or download at twit.tv/tnss, in both audio and video versions and outlets such as Apple’s iTunes Store.
