Warner Bros is busy today. Minutes after announcing dates for the next three pics in the Lego Movie franchise, it set its 3D animated Storks, led by the voice work of Andy Samberg and Kelsey Grammer, to bow on September 23, 2016. That’s the date just vacated by the Lego Movie spinoff Ninjago. More voice cast will be announced shortly for Storks, which the studio says will be a funny and fresh look at the fable behind storks — so I guess about the fable behind how they deliver babies. There was something similar to this done a few years back by Pixar, which now is on its best-of DVD set. It was a 2009 short called Partly Cloudy. Warner Bros Animation is calling Storks an original story.
Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors) and Doug Sweetland (the Oscar-nominated short Presto) are co-directing the feature from an original script by Stoller. Stoller is also producing the film, together with Brad Lewis. Glenn Ficarra, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie), John Requa and Jared Stern are serving as executive producers.
There is believed to be yet another animated film that has yet to be set for release: Smallfoot, written by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, from an original idea by Despicable Me‘s Sergio Pablos, who was supposed to direct.
