As promised, the Cannes Film Festival has added a handful of titles to the Official Selection, bringing the Compeition and Un Certain Regard lineups to a total of 19 films each. Notably making Thierry Frémaux’s extras today is Gaspar Noé‘s Love. The film had been tipped for Competition but was given a Midnight Screening berth. The controversial filmmaker here offers up an “arousing sexual melodrama about a boy and a girl and another girl.”
Added in Competition is Guillaume Nicloux’s The Valley Of Love, which had been expected. It stars Gérard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert as a couple who reunite in Death Valley after the loss of their son. Michel Franco’s Chronic also is new to the section. Tim Roth stars in the English-language debut of After Lucia helmer Franco. The story tracks a depressed nurse practitioner who assists terminally ill patients and tries to reconnect with the family he abandoned.
For Un Certain Regard, Frémaux also has plucked Alias Maria by José Luis Rugeles Gracia; Taklub by Brillante Mendoza; Lamb by Yared Zeleke, marking the first time Ethiopia has had a movie in Official Selection; and Cemetery Of Splendour by Palme d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives). Frequent Cannes presence Naomi Kawase will open the section with AN.
The latest from prolific auteur Robert Guédiguian, Une Histoire De Fou (Don’t Tell Me The Boy Was Mad), has been given a Special Screening slot.
The festival runs from May 13-24.
