EXCLUSIVE: She’s had a fine run co-starring in films like Bridesmaids, Neighbors and the series Damages. Now, Rose Byrne wants to take the next step, producing films from a female perspective. She has formed The Dollhouse Collective, joining forces with fellow Aussies Gracie Otto, Krew Boylan, Shannon Murphy and Jessica Carrera. Their Sydney-based shingle has begun to hatch film, TV and theater projects and their mission statement is to be “focus on being champions of change, risk takers, friends and passionate storytellers.”
Among their first projects: Boylan is writing her first script, Seriously Red, about a woman obsessed with Dolly Parton. Boylan has received development funding from Screen Australia for a film produced by Night Kitchen Productions in association with The Dollhouse Collective, with Byrne as exec producer.
Murphy will direct When All the Water, from a script by Marisa Nather. Murphy, a graduate of NIDA and AFTRS, recently directed Silvia Colloca in Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice at the Art Gallery of NSW as part of the SMH Spectrum Festival.
Girls in Heaven is described as a visual mystery that unravels through timezones and hotels and Otto will direct with Jessica Carrera producing. Otto last directed The Last Impresario. Carrera is also CEO of Carrera Press Agency and was publicity head for Australia-based theatrical agency Shannahan Managment.
As an actress, Byrne will next be seen reteaming with Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig in Spy, and she wrapped the Lorene Scafaria-directed The Meddler opposite Susan Sarandon. She’ll reprise as Moira McTaggert in the Byran Singer-directed X-Men: Apocalypse, which shoots in Montreal this spring.
