Days after Harry Shearer announced he wasn’t returning to Fox’s The Simpsons for a 27th season, Nancy Cartwright and all her voices, including Bart Simpson, showed up at Deadline’s Cannes Film Festival studio at Nikki Beach’s Le Petit Bar at the Carlton Hotel. We asked her about Shearer’s sudden exit, to which she responded, “The only one who knows about it is Maggie and she’s not talkin!”
It was Cartwright’s first visit to Cannes, but it wasn’t Bart’s first visit to France. She reminded us that he was kidnapped once and stayed on a French farm during season 2. For the episode, Cartwright recalled that she had to work with a French dialect coach to get the phonetics down.
However, the prime reason for Cartwright’s Cannes getaway was because she’s prepping an upcoming feature film based on her one woman 1995 stage show, In Search of Fellini. Developed in collaboration with writer Peter Kjenaas and director Leslie Welles, Fellini follows Cartwright’s mission during her twenties to track down the great director on his Italian home turf and secure the stage rights to La Strada. Along the way, there’s a couple of ill-fated romances, a glass sculpture and rum-laced pastries. Take a look at our interview with her. Not only does she talk about Shearer, but she reveals why a sequel to The Simpsons Movie has largely been delayed.
