It was the first podcast to win a Peabody Award. Crime series Serial, from This American Life and WBEZ Chicago, is set to return for a second season in the fall and a third next spring, per an email blasted to subscribers. Season 1 was hosted by Sarah Koenig and explored the 1999 murder of Baltimore teenager Hae Min Lee and her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed’s subsequent life sentence. Syed continues to claim that he’s innocent. Following the conclusion of Serial‘s first season in December, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals granted Syed license to move forward with the appeal of his case, according to the Washington Post.
“We are hard at work reporting not one, but two distinct new stories,” reads the email. “As it stands, we intend to launch Season Two this fall and Season Three next spring. Sorry — we can’t tell you details about the new stories yet. What we can say is that they’re very different from Season One, but no less interesting to us.”
Serial won a Peabody back in April. The podcast is produced by Chicago Public Media/This American Life and has been downloaded nearly 60 million times.
