EXCLUSIVE: Entertainment One is dropping the puck on Goon: Last Of The Enforcers, a sequel to the 2011 indie. Wyatt Russell has just been set to star in the film, with Liev Schreiber returning as the iconic brawler Ross “The Boss” Rhea and Seann William Scott as lovable enforcer Doug “The Thug” Glatt. Jay Baruchel, who co-wrote the script with Jesse Chabot, will direct as he reprises his role as Dougthe Thug’s best pal, Pat. Also reprising will be Marc-André Grondin as superstar Xavier LaFlamme, Kim Coates as Highlanders Coach Ronnie Hortense, and Alison Pill as Glatt’s love interest, Eva. Elisha Cuthbert also will star. Production begins in June 22 in Toronto on the co-production between No Trace Camping and Caramel Films.
I thought Goon was an underexploited indie gem that was both funny and poignant. It’s about a sweet-natured hockey player who makes up for his limited skills with a knockout punch and ability to absorb punishment, who becomes conflicted about dropping opponents in the vein of Slap Shot’s bespectacled Hanson Brothers. This led to a showdown with the reigning minor league bad boy Ross “The Boss” Rhea.
Russell, most recently seen in 22 Jump Street, next stars in the Richard Linklater-directed That’s What I’m Talking About. He played professional hockey in Canada and Europe following a collegiate career at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. He will play Anders Cain, a volatile young hot shot who becomes captain of the Halifax Highlanders when a pro lockout suddenly sends a slew of new players down to the minors. Cuthbert plays Mary, sister and confidante of Eva, who now is married to Doug the Thug.
The producers are David Gross, Jesse Shapira, and Jeff Arkuss of No Trace Camping and André Rouleau of Caramel Films. eOne will distribute the film in Canada. Russell’s repped by UTA.
