EXCLUSIVE: James Mangold will direct an adaptation of the Chris Greenhalgh book Seducing Ingrid Bergman, which Mangold wanted to go by the title Blood And Champagne but it looks like that might be hard to clear. The script has been written by Arash Amel and is being financed by Uday Chopra’s YRF Entertainment. Amel is producing with Chopra, who’ll finance the film. Seducing Ingrid Bergman is the story of a torrid, clandestine romance between the beloved actress and the celebrated war photographer Robert Capa. Their tryst took place in post-WWII 1945 Paris, right before the onset of the Cold War and communist witch hunting. YRF production president Jonathan Reiman will be exec producer.
When Deadline first revealed the project in 2013, Amel said that the love affair set the stage for an image change for Bergman, whose The Bells Of St. Mary’s wholesome image would be shattered when her affair with director Roberto Rossellini became public and she was actually denounced by the U.S. Senate for loose morals when this Swedish housewife left home and fell in love with a playboy filmmaker.
Mangold is working on his second Wolverine collaboration with Hugh Jackman for Fox, and he is working on the script of the Bergman project with Amel. WME and Management 360 rep Mangold. Amel is repped by CAA and Grandview.
