Debuting Tuesday night on CBS, Zoo is going to make you cringe and giggle for all the wrong reasons in some of the right places. Simply put, as my video review above says, this summer series adaptation of James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge’s 2012 bestseller is silly goofy dumb fun.
Here’s the deal: the world’s animals have decided that us humans have to go and they’ve started to attack. Having said that, there’s not a lot of blood – this is Big 4 TV after all – but there are a lot of moments that strain the imagination and made me laugh out loud. One specifically involving a tree full of Brentwood cats in the pilot that was only bested by a text message from Billy Burke’s character that says, “I found the cats.” Dependable actors like Burke, James Wolk, Reid Scott and Kristen Connolly do the best they can with the writing from the likes of Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg. But really there is only so far you can go with this stuff.
Look, the 13-episode thriller of a sort isn’t the best thing on TV by far, but for escapism value it delivers – even if it’s not in the way I think they intended. So check out my review and tell us if you’ll be getting in the cage with CBS tomorrow night.
