MPI Media Group has acquired all distribution rights to I Am Thor. It’s not about the hammer-swinging superhero, but rather a biographical film about Jon Mikl Thor, an unsung hero of the golden age of heavy metal, and his attempt at a comeback. The film, directed by Ryan Wise (Prom Queen), will receive a late fall theatrical release. MPI Media Group Executive Vice President Greg Newman made the deal with Glen Reynolds, the President and CEO of Circus Road Films.
Thor was a bodybuilding, steel-bending, brick-smashing rock star in the 1970s and ’80s whose theatrical band Thor came on the scene alongside metal bands like Metallica and Kiss. It just never caught on. Thor moved on to acting in films like Rock ’n’ Roll Nightmare and Zombie Nightmare, and then he disappeared from the entertainment map. Some 10 years into retirement, and bored out of his mind living out of an even dimmed limelight, Thor attempts a comeback to achieve the level of success that eluded him his entire career – nearly dying in the process.
“Jon Mikl Thor is truly a larger-than-life hero who embodies the spirit of heavy metal, and his story of following his dream in the face of adversity is inspiring to witness,” Newman said.
