Todd Haimes’ Roundabout Theatre Company has signed the Oscar nominee and New York stage veteran to star as James Tyrone Jr., son of aging former matinee idol James Tyrone, played by Gabriel Byrne, in its revival of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Shannon (the upcoming 99 Homes and Freeheld) will co-star opposite Byrne and Jessica Lange as his wife, the drug-addicted Mary Tyrone, in the O’Neill masterpiece, first presented in 1956. Shannon, a regular on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and seen in films such as Revolutionary Road, is a longtime New York stage presence whose work ranges from modern classics (Uncle Vanya) to contemporary work (Bug, The Little Flower Of East Orange).
The Roundabout production is being mounted in association with Lange’s American Horror Story producer Ryan Murphy and will also star John Gallagher Jr. (HBO’s The Newsroom) as lost-soul son Edmund. British helmer Jonathan Kent, whose stagings of Medea and Hamlet were seen on Broadway, directs.
Long Day’s Journey is slated to begin previews on March 31, 2016 and open officially on April 19 at the Roundabout’s American Airlines Theatre in Times Square.
