Showtime president David Nevis today shed more light on the upcoming fifth season of Homeland, which is currently filming in Berlin, Germany.
“The first episode’s going to deal with Russia — what’s Putin up to? What’s going on with this tricky relationship there?” Nevins said at TCA. “It deals with ISIS. Charlie Hebdo. (Edward) Snowden, cyber terrorism, surveillance. These are interesting elements to the season, which brings a lot of things together.”
The Putin storyline will be tied to “what’s going on with Ukraine,” Nevins said after the session. He noted that Berlin “is a crossroads between the old eastern block and the western block, a crossroads between Western Europe and the Muslim world. It’s also a place with the strictest privacy laws in the world.”
Season 5 tales place two years after the events in season 4, with Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) in a self-imposed exile in Berlin, estranged from the CIA and working for a private security firm.
Nevins said he thinks “there is a lot of life left in Homeland.” “The show proved last year its ability to have a new fresh story each season. It is doing it again this year.” While original male lead Damian Lewis left after 3 season, Danes “is not going anywhere,” Nevins said.
Nevins feels the same way about Penny Dreadful, recently renewed for a third season. “This is just the beginning,” he said.
