UPDATES with Rebellion co-production: Sky Atlantic and Canal Plus’ heist drama The Last Panthers is world premiering tonight here at Mipcom in Cannes. While the traditional opening night red carpet has been cancelled due to logistic issues brought about by the violent storms that battered the Riviera over the weekend, the show is going — and has a new co-producer aboard. SundanceTV is partnering on the six-part crime series with a spring 2016 air date planned in the U.S. Sky said last week that it would simulcast Last Panthers to its 21M subscribers in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria on November 12. Canal Plus is eyeing a French launch for later this year.
Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim, Goran Bogdan and John Hurt star is the Haut et Court and Warp Films production which is inspired by a real-life gang of Balkan jewel thieves. Set in modern day Europe, it’s based on an idea by French journalist Jérôme Pierrat, and co-created and written by Jack Thorne (Skins). Breaking Bad‘s Johan Renck is director and the opening title music is by David Bowie.
The series kicks off with a daring diamond heist bearing all the hallmarks of a gang known as the Pink Panthers. But the tragic death of a little girl during the raid sets a collision course in motion involving a British insurance agent, a French-Algerian cop and a Serbian diamond thief. Studiocanal and Sky Vision jointly handle sales.
