People hankering for a Training Day fix might have their needs met by Triple 9, the upcoming heist thriller from director John Hillcoat and starring Casey Affleck that sees a posse of corrupt cops blackmailed into serious criminal shenanigans by a sleazy Russian mobster. Into the mix comes rookie cop Chris Allen (Affleck), set up to be merked (hence the film’s title — 999 being code for “officer down”) by the corrupt cops as a distraction while they pull off the job, only to survive and fight back.
It’s going to be bleak and bloody, and fittingly the trailer doesn’t hold back. Drugs, guns, occasional nudity and lots and lots of violence are the order of the day, underscored by an unsettling cover of Cypress Hill’s 1991 ode to police corruption, “Pigs.” Along with Affleck, the films stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Clifton Collins Jr., Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Gal Gadot, Kate Winslet and Woody Harrelson (seriously channeling his Rampart character here). From Open Road Films, it’s written by Hillcoat and Matt Cook. Triple 9 is scheduled to stick up theaters February 19.
