Hot on the heels of the much-lauded film The Big Short comes Dry Powder, Sarah Burgess’ new play about finance and the U.S. economy that will star Homeland‘s Claire Danes and Hank Azaria (The Simpsons) along with the previously announced John Krasinski (The Office) and Sanjit De Silva (After Party). Thomas Kail (Hamilton) will direct the show, slated to begin performances at the Public Theater on March 1. The Public describes it as “a deliciously funny new drama about the people shaping, and skewing, the American economy.” The official opening will be March 22.
Dry Powder also was named to today as a co-recipient of this year’s Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award, along with American Son by Christopher Demos-Brown, which will have its premiere at Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts. The playwrights each will receive $25,000. and the presenting nonprofits $50,000 each for the productions, from the foundation, a legacy of the late playwright and director Arthur Laurents and his partner, Tom Hatcher.
“The same week his private equity firm forced massive layoffs at a national grocery chain, Rick (Azaria) threw himself an extravagant engagement party, setting off a publicity nightmare,” per the Public Theater announcement. “Fortunately, Seth (Krasinski), one of Rick’s partners, has a win-win deal to invest in an American-made luggage company run by Jeff (De Silva) for a song and rescue his boss from a PR disaster. But Jenny (Danes), Seth’s counterpart, has an entirely different plan: To squeeze every last penny out of the company, no matter the consequences. The game is on in Sarah Burgess’ gripping, razor-sharp new play about the price of success and the real cost of getting the deal done.”
Dry Powder features sets by Rachel Hauck, costumes by Clint Ramos, lighting by Jason Lyons and sound by Lindsay Jones.
