A woman is in serious condition today after police say a man who appeared intoxicated accidentally shot her during a Thursday night screening of Michael Bay’s Benghazi movie 13 Hours. Police in the Seattle suburb of Renton say the suspect left the theater after the shooting, but the man’s father called 911 soon after to turn him in.
The shooting happened about 8 PM Thursday at the the Regal Cinemas at the Landing. The suspect surrendered to officers at his home in nearby Newcastle.
Police say the 29-year-old suspect told them he had been drinking and dropped the handgun and it went off, striking the woman in the torso. She was taken to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center in critical condition but was upgraded to serious this morning.
“We have witnesses that say he came into the theater and appeared intoxicated,” David Leibman of the Renton Police Department told KOMO-TV Seattle. “He went in and took a seat in theater No. 9 and was fumbling with a pistol when it went off and struck someone sitting in front of him.”
No word yet on formal charges.
