First Look Media, whose first project was acting as a co-financier on this year’s Best Picture Oscar winner Spotlight, has hired veteran executive Annie Marter as SVP Feature Film, with an eye on growing the studio’s film slate. She will report to Adam Pincus, First Look’s EVP Programming and Content. The news comes as First Look hits Cannes with the Laura Directors’ Fortnight title Risk, exec produced by Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail.
As part of the feature film ramp-up, First Look also said it is developing an under-wraps script from writer-director David Riker based on unpublished reporting by Jeremy Scahill, one of three founding editors of The Intercept (along with Poitras and fellow journalist Glenn Greenwald, who teamed on the Edward Snowden docu Citizenfour). Riker and Scahill are reteaming after their docu Dirty Wars, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar.
“We are thrilled to be working with this team who had such success with Dirty Wars,” Marter said. “Jeremy’s a world-class reporter who consistently uncovers the truth, and as a writer, David’s got such a strong and distinctive voice. Though we can’t reveal details, the subject is fascinating and incredibly relevant.”
Marter’s producing credits include the Johnny Depp-starrer Transcendence, and she worked as an executive on pics including Sunshine Cleaning, Let Me In, Jack Goes Boating, The Men Who Stare At Goats and The Visitor.
“Annie’s got great taste in material and filmmakers, and strong relationships throughout the independent film world,” Pincus said. “Her track record in both finding and supporting new talent and working closely with more established makers lines up perfectly with what we’re building at First Look Media.”
