Updated with more primary results: Hillary Clinton remained unable to shake off Bernie Sanders today: The Vermont senator was projected (first by NBC News) to win the Dem primary in West Virginia shortly after polls closed there. Meanwhile, TV news networks called the Mountain State for presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, against no opponents because they’ve all suspended their campaigns. Ditto Trump in the Nebraska primary.
Results in West Virginia and Nebraska come as a new Quinnipiac University Poll out today shows Clinton leading Trump by just one point in swing states Florida and Pennsylvania but trailing 43%-39% in Ohio. The poll suggests that Sanders does better in hypothetical matchups with Trump in those three key states.
Meanwhile, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who suspended his GOP campaign the day of the Indiana primary, today told Glenn Beck “the reason we suspended the race last week is with Indiana’s loss I don’t see a viable path to victory.” But he added, “If that changes we will certainly respond accordingly.”
And, in his first national TV interview since dropping out of the GOP race, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said he will honor the pledge he signed to support his party’s nominee, even if it’s Trump, but that his oft-spoken “reservations” about the billionaire’s positions “are well documented and remain.”
“The bottom line is, whether we like it or not, Donald has been able to tap into a sense in this country of millions of Americans that they’re being left behind by massive transitions in our economy,” Cruz told CNN’s Jake Tapper. That sense, Cruz said, has been “compounded by an economic meltdown in 2008, compounded by eight years of Barack Obama’s policies that have left Americans feeling that America is weaker in the world. And [Trump] was able to tap into that successfully, and become the nominee. That’s the reality of what we face,” he added, soberly.
Or, as Trump put it, citing the Quinnipiac University Poll results, “The healing has begun.”
