Courtney Love and Joey King have signed on to star in The Possibility Of Fireflies, ARC49 Entertainment’s adaptation of the novel by Dominique Paul. Set in 1989 in suburban Maryland, the story follows Ellie Roma (King), a precocious teenager who dreams of becoming a writer but must cope with her chaotic, self-destructive mother Susanna (Love) and a volatile metal-head sister, Gwen. When Ellie falls in love with her older neighbor, aspiring singer Leo, she gets caught up in the allure of the freedom his lifestyle represents and must make a decision that will change her life forever.
Directed by Deborah Chow and produced by Amy Green, Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida of ARC49, filming is set to get underway this summer in Canada with theatrical release set for sometime in 2017. Additional cast will be announced in the coming months.
Epic Pictures Group has acquired international sales rights to the film and is repping it at the Cannes market. UTA Independent Film Group is selling the film stateside.
Canadian musicians Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk will team with Grammy-nominated artist, producer and composer BT to create the film’s ’80s-inspired soundtrack, with BT also composing the original score. (The film notably takes place immediately before the musical movement spearheaded by Love’s late husband Kurt Cobain took off with his band Nirvana’s 1991 breakthrough album Nevermind.)
Chow previously wrote and directed the indie film The High Cost Of Living as well as episodes of Mr. Robot, Fear the Walking Dead, and Reign. She’s repped by UTA and Writ Large.
Love is best known as an actress for her Golden Globe-nominated role in The People Vs. Larry Flynt, as well as her appearances in Sid And Nancy, Man On The Moon, Sons Of Anarchy and Empire. She’s repped by UTA.
King is known for Ramona And Beezus, White House Down and Wish You Were Here, and appears in the upcoming Independence Day: Resurgence. She’s repped by UTA, Coast To Coast, and Industry Entertainment.
