Syracuse University’s Newhouse School feted alum and Turner President David Levy today in its annual event to celebrate the media elite — as well as journalists who in 2015 produced stories about the industry.
Levy won the Fred Dressler Leadership Award at a New York City luncheon. The school treated him to a celebratory video featuring some of his more famous employees including sportscaster Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Marv Alpert, and comic Conan O’Brien.
In addition, Syracuse handed out its 10th annual Mirror Awards which it calls the “most important awards for recognizing excellence in media industry reporting.”
Vanity Fair, Nieman Reports, New York Magazine, Fortune, The New York Times Magazine, and CNN accounted for 17 of the 28 finalists. Five of the six winners came from glossy magazines or a digital offshoot.
GQ‘s Taffy Brodesser-Anker won the “Best Profile” award for a feature about CNN’s Don Lemon. New York Magazine’s Frank Rich won the “Best Commentary” prize for “A Dumb Job,” a critique of TV news anchors. Fortune‘s Peter Elkind won “Best Single Article Traditional/Legacy Media” for his in-depth examination of the hack attack on Sony Pictures.
Nieman Reports‘ Celeste Lecompte won “Best Single Article Digital Media” for a feature about newsrooms’ increasing use of algorithms to automatically generate stories. Independent podcaster Matthew Billy of Between the Liner Notes won “Best Single Story Radio, Television, Cable or Online Broadcast Media” for a look back at the origin of MTV.
And New York Times Magazine‘s Jonathan Mahler won the “John M. Higgins Award for Best In-Depth/Enterprise Reporting” for a feature about the journalists who offered conflicting accounts of Osama bin Laden’t death.
