FilmBuff said today it has sealed the first international theatrical, home video and TV distribution deals for Lazer Team, Rooster Teeth’s sci-fi/action comedy that broke out this year as one of the first titles launched on YouTube Red following a U.S. theatrical run in January that saw $1 million in ticket presales. A pact with Japan’s AT Entertainment will see a July 19 theatrical release for the pic followed by a home video release in August. The movie scored one of the biggest crowdfunded totals ever when raised more than $2.4 million on IndieGoGo. In addition to Japan, the film will be released in German-speaking Europe by Edel AG, whose license will begin in February 2017.
Character and special effects house MastersFX has opened a new studio in Toronto, joining outposts in Los Angeles and Vancouver. Founder Todd Masters is teaming with longtime associate, Toronto-based Makeup FX Supervisor Zane Knisely on the new base. The company, which is currently working on the Toronto-based Syfy series The Expanse as well as projects like CW’s iZombie and CBS’ Zoo, most recently won an Outstanding Makeup Emmy for Netflix’s TV movie R.L. Stine’s Monsterville: The Cabinet Of Souls.
Mr. Church starring Eddie Murphy, The Legend Of Tarzan and Ghostbusters — all distributed by Warner Bros overseas — will screen at the 14th annual Ischia Global Film and Music Festival in Italy, where Bruce Beresford will receive the Ischia Legend Award. The fest runs July 10-17.
