EXCLUSIVE: Tom Hardy, coming off an Oscar nom for The Revenant, will play legendary British war photographer Don McCullin in a film that ’71 scribe Gregory Burke has adapted from McCullin’s autobiography Unreasonable Behaviour. The film will be produced by Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, with Hardy and Dean Baker of Hardy, Son & Baker. McCullin and Mark George are exec producing.
The book is an unflinching account of McCullin’s journey from a poverty-stricken childhood in wartime London to becoming one of the most famous war photojournalists. Working for the Sunday Times from the late 60’s to the early 80’s, he risked his life to photograph the harsh realities of war from Vietnam, Cambodia, to Biafra and Uganda, one black and white image at a time. Hardy, who is currently reteamed with The Dark Knight Rises helmer Christopher Nolan on Dunkirk, had an exceptional 2015 between The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road and Legend, the latter of which was produced by Working Title. Bevan and Fellner have upcoming Bridget Jones’s Baby, the Tomas Alfredson-directed The Snowman with Michael Fassbender, the Edgar Wright-directed Baby Driver, and the Chloe Moretz-starrer The Little Mermaid. Hardy, Son & Baker are producing the miniseries Taboo. Hardy is represented by CAA, United Agents and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. UTA reps Burke.
