Jake Gyllenhaal will return to the Broadway stage to star in the revival of Landford Wilson’s play Burn This, a production set to begin performances in February 2017 that will mark the reopening of the Ambassador Theatre Group’s Hudson Theatre after five decades. The play officially opens March 6.
Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer will direct the drama, which originally bowed on Broadway in 1987 with John Malkovich and Joan Allen starring, earning Allen the Tony for playing Anna, a dancer-choreographer who meets her recently deceased dance partner’s older brother Pale — the encounter changes her life forever. It ran seven previews and 437 performances.
Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut in 2014 with Nick Payne’s Constellations and was also in Little Shop Of Horrors. He is also in the New York City Center’s benefit concert presentations of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sunday In The Park With George in October.
The Hudson first opened in 1903 and in 1956 hosted the first nationwide broadcast of The Tonight Show starring Steve Allen.
