Gold, which stars Matthew McConaughey as a modern-day gold prospector, will be released in theaters on December 25, 2016, distributor TWC-Dimension unveiled today. Stephen Gaghan directed the pic, which also stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Edgar Ramirez. The film is good counter-programming to other films bowing on Christmas Day which includes Disney’s Star Wars stand-alone pic Rogue One which bows December 16. Also opening wide that date (Christmas falls on a Sunday this year) is Warner Bros/New Line’s Collateral Beauty. They are joined by Paramount’s Denzel Washington adaptation of Fences as well as The Orchard’s Neruda.
The holiday time frame is very crowded this year as TWC has another film dropping into the mix as well with its Oscar hopeful The Founder, starring Michael Keaton, which will bow on Dec. 16. The film is getting a new score right now and wasn’t ready for its previous August date.
In addition, the following frame starting December 28, is loaded with five more wide bows: Fox’s Assassin’s Creed, Sony/Columbia’s Passengers, Universal’s Sing, STX’s The Space Between Us and Fox’s Why Him? Also notable that day: Peter Berg’s Boston Marathon bombing pic Patriots Day.
In Gold, McConaughey plays Kenny Wells, who desperate for a lucky break teams with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on a journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. Getting the gold was hard, but keeping it would be even harder, sparking an adventure through the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street. The film is inspired by a true story. Patrick Massett & John Zinman wrote the script.
