The Dirk Gently countdown has begun. Ahead of the October premiere of its anticipated original series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, BBC America will air a Star Trek marathon of uncut digitally remastered HD versions of the original episodes of the series’ first and second seasons. They’ll begin airing on Thursday, September 8, the 50th anniversary of the iconic series premiere on NBC, and run through Sunday, September 11.
In addition, BBCA is running the two first seasons of sister network AMC’s series Into the Badlands and Humans on Saturdays leading up to the Dirk Gently premiere. Into the Badlands Season 1 is currently airing and Humans launches September 30, at 11 PM ET. Limited series Sherlock also returns for an encore on BBCA, with network premieres of episodes “A Scandal in Belgravia,” “The Hounds of Baskerville” and “The Reichenbach Fall” airing three straight Saturdays, starting on October 1, at 8 PM ET. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency premieres at 9 PM ET on October 22.
Written and executive produced by Max Landis and based on the cult Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency novels by Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy author Douglas Adams, the BBCA series stars Samuel Barnett (Dirk) and Elijah Wood (Todd). When the bizarre murder of a millionaire thrusts loner Todd (Wood), into the orbit of Dirk Gently (Barnett), an eccentric detective who believes they’re destined to solve the mind-bending mystery together, his life will never be the same. They’ll cross unlikely paths with a bevy of wild and dangerous characters, each episode landing them a few random steps closer to uncovering the truth. Robert Cooper is showrunner. Oscar-winning director Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest, Justified, Masters of Sex) has directed the series’ first two episodes.
