UPDATE with more deals: Following its North American premiere in the Masters section at the Toronto Film Festival, Music Box Films has acquired U.S. rights to A Quiet Passion. The Terence Davies-directed film that stars Cynthia Nixon as the reclusive 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson, who produced nearly 1800 poems, nearly all unpublished in her lifetime, and who gradually emerged posthumously as one of the great poets of world literature. Pic premiered in Berlin and will play at the New York Film Festival. UTA Independent Film Group handled the U.S. sale.
Two Lovers And A Bear, the romantic drama starring Dane DeHaan and Tatiana Maslany that played in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight this year before making its North American premiere in Toronto, has sold to Fox for home entertainment rights and will bow on Netflix in 2017. Kim Nguyen directed the pic, set near the North Pole and centering on two burning souls who make a leap for life and inner peace. Tajj Media made the deal.
Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American rights to Do Over, the Ryan Francis-directed romantic comedy starring Drew Seeley, Jonathan Bennett, Zack Lively, Amy Paffrath, and Gina Field. It will bow on VOD on October 11 with select theatrical showings to follow, and marks the latest deal of Byron Allen’s new digital distribution arm. It centers on a group of reunited friends in L.A. who are challenged to find the people they lost their virginity to get a do-over years later.
Indican Pictures has acquired rights to Search Engines, a pic written and directed by Russell Brown about what happens if your cellphones and computers stopped working and your dysfunctional family is forced to actually connect and talk. Joely Fisher, Daphne Zuniga, Barry Watson and Natasha Gregson Wagner star in the film, which is aiming for a Thanksgiving Week bow in select cities.
