“Just doin’ a little huntin’.” That’s what the truly creepy Sam (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) calls trying to pick off helpless migrants who are trapped in the desert. Gael Garcia Bernal stars in Desierto as the prey in this border thriller from director Jonas Cuarón, who co-wrote the pic with Mateo García Elizondo. The Gravity scribe’s father, Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, is among the producers.
Moises (Garcia Bernal) heads north to make a better life for himself and his family, so crosses the border in the United States with a group of unarmed men and women. But they didn’t count on Sam, his bloodthirsty hound and high-powered rifle. The merciless vigilante terrorizes the group as he stays on their trail through the unforgiving terrain.
Alondra Hidalgo co-stars in the suspenseful pic, which premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and won the international critics’ FIPRESCI Prize, and has been rolling out in select territories this year. STX Entertainment opens Desierto stateside on October 14. Have a look at the trailer, and tell us what you think.
