PBS and Masterpiece hinted as much when they announced production on Season 4 of Sherlock this spring that Martin Freeman’s John Watson’s new baby would have a role in the new adventures. That’s confirmed as of today, when PBS dropped first-look photos from the BBC One/Masterpiece series.
Season 4 will have its day-and-date debut in the U.S. and UK on January 1 with an episode entitled “The Six Thatchers,” reuniting Benedict Cumberbatch as eponymous high-functioning sociopath Sherlock Holmes and Freeman as his trusty sidekick.
Like the previous three seasons, Season 4 will comprise three new episodes which promise “laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases,” the networks said in announcing the start of shooting in April.
Produced by Hartswood Films, the series made a triumphant return to television on New Year’s Day this year with a special 90-minute episode “The Abominable Bride.” It was released theatrically and notched big box office, notably in China and Korea, then pulled off an upset and won the Emmy Award this year for Outstanding TV Movie.
Here are the photos PBS dropped today, which include the first look at new bad guy Toby Jones who plays Culverton Jones, a character from Doyle’s story “The Adventure Of The Dying Detective.”
